Title

ODHA - Ohio Dental Hygienists' Association, Inc.

Description

WOW! This is quite a milestone for me. I don’t believe that when I began my career as a Dental Hygienist or even began my involvement in this, our professional association that I ever ENVISIONED that I would be [standing at a podium one day], addressing so many esteemed colleagues and members of the Dental profession. I am humbled, but honored to speak to you today in acceptance of your confidence in me as I assume my new role as President of the Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association.

I believe that my faith has played a major role in molding my perception of how I am to fulfill the responsibilities of this administrative position. Typically, one’s achievements are considered the outcome of personal goals. This was not a personal goal. I did not set out to climb any hierarchal ladder, at any level. In all honesty, I believe that is a good thing. I have learned that it is more important to put the interest of others before myself. The bottom line is, it’s not about me or what I can accomplish. It’s about this association and the members it is comprised of. Even beyond that, it is about the profession of Dental Hygiene and the thousands of Dental Hygienists in the state of Ohio.

I don’t believe that anyone would choose to stay in a career or profession for an extended period of time or life time unless they truly believe in what they are doing and enjoy it. I love Dental Hygiene. I love what I do, as I am sure is the case for each and every one of you. Unfortunately, we sometimes become complacent . It is my hope, for the next year, to re-ignite the pilot light that has been dwindling and to kick start that passion that we all have for this profession and the future of Dental Hygiene. We must ELIMINATE THE BOX. We need to see beyond four walls. We have to tear down the walls that have prevented us from moving forward. ENVISION the future of Dental Hygiene and EMBRACE it with a certainty and confidence as we EMPOWER the next generation of leaders to navigate the challenges and obstacles that lie ahead. Continue to mentor those who accept the responsibilities of these critical roles, but also ENCOURAGE them and others to ELIMINATE THE BOX. We cannot continue to allow ourselves to be confined to a cubicle. It is not the nature of the services that we provide to be coddled and controlled. In other words, we do not need supervision, we need support. We need to seek collaboration among all dental professionals so that we can do what we have been educated to do, and that is to provide preventative dental services to all populations. Now is a critical time. There are growing numbers of underserved individuals across the country, and right here in Ohio.
