Nearly a quarter century ago, as local legend tell us, Chet S., an avid collector of antiquarian books and ephemera, and a seasoned hunter of book fairs and sales, began to sell some of his collection out of a location on North Street in Bennington, Vermont, where the new Dunkin Donuts now stands. As word-of-mouth spread in town of Chet's great selection, customers from nearby towns began to stop by for a browse. He then decided to give up antiques and go into the book business exclusively as more than a hobby, and, after a brief stay in his garage on County Street, Chet moved his impressive collection up to the second floor of the Cone Building at 439 Main Street, where it remains to this day. In 1990, noted local rock musician, former school teacher, and current librarian Wolf R. purchased the store and steadily increased the inventory to near its current levels. In the mid-90's, Wolf seized the opportunity to tour world-wide with Peter, Paul & Mary, selling the store to Paul L., an erstwhile school teacher, sheriff's deputy, dog groomer, jet fueler and avid sailor. Paul's versatility contributed greatly to the store's increased subject selection, and building of off-site stock for mail orders that would eventually begin to come in over the phone from all over the country. Finally, in 2003, with Paul ever hungry for new adventures, Telly H., a former corporate VP, tour guide, ghost editor, Army officer, published poet, semi-pro soccer player, and lover of year-round backcountry adventures, Siberian Huskies (3), and cats (7), purchased Now And Then Books, and operates it to this day. The Internet is our newest chapter, and on behalf of all the previous owners (who still reside in Bennington), we are pleased to join an entire new generation of book-lovers in cyberspace, and want to make your visit to our little book corner the best possible experience that it can be!
