Description

Northwood University was founded in 1959 by Dr. Arthur E. Turner and Dr. R. Gary Stauffer, who knew that the liberal arts approach to business did not really expose students to the wealth of opportunities that the world of work had to offer. Established originally in Alma, Michigan, the school moved to Midland in 1961. The Texas campus was opened in 1966. Other expansions include the Florida campus in West Palm Beach and the Northwood University Margaret Chase Smith Library Center in Skowhegan, Maine.

Northwood University also coordinates a nontraditional program, University College (UC), headquartered at the Midland, Michigan, campus. Extension centers are located on all three campuses and in thirty-one satellite locations across the United States. UC is dedicated to providing nontraditional options for earning management degrees to adults over the age of 25 who are balancing work, family, community, and educational goals. Executive, managerial, and full-time M.B.A. programs are also offered at the University through the Richard DeVos Graduate School of Management.

Northwood's Midland, Michigan, campus is a landmark of architectural achievement. Distinguished architect Alden B. Dow designed the buildings to blend beautifully with the campus grounds, and its footpaths wind through beautiful green forests along the banks of the Tittabawassee River. Important activities on the Michigan campus include North America’s largest outdoor auto show, an annual fashion show, student government, major-specific clubs, recreational and hobby clubs, fraternities, sororities, service clubs, and intramural sports. The Bennett Sports Center/Hach Student Activity Center houses the campus athletics headquarters; a six-lane pool; facilities for basketball, dance, and indoor tennis; and state-of-the-art fitness centers that feature Nautilus weight machines. Outstanding teams are fielded every year in men's baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field. Women's varsity teams include basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. The campus is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II.
