When William the Conqueror compiled the Doomsday Book in 1070 there was a house on the site, but the present Manor House was completely rebuilt to a design by Sir Aston Webb, after the previous house had been burned down in a disastrous fire. Sir Aston Webb was responsible for many fine public buildings and houses including the extensions to Buckingham Palace which comprise the whole of the present front facing the Mall.
