Description

Our Mission

To provide crisis intervention and support services to all victims of domestic violence and their families in order to help survivors recover from the trauma of domestic violence. We work towards the elimination of domestic violence by increasing public awareness and decreasing tolerance of domestic violence through community collaboration and education. The Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women will strive to improve the quality and safety of the lives of victims who are seeking peace in their homes and in their daily existence.

About Our Founder and the Helpline

After a number of years of researching domestic violence and speaking with men who fit the definition of "abused" according to all the literature written about battered women, Jan Brown, DAHMW’s founder, learned that help for male victims of domestic abuse was largely non-existent. Ms. Brown saw that there was a need for such resources, and so the question began to emerge in her mind: “If not me, then who?” And so in October 2000, Ms. Brown put together a board of others who saw the need and the Domestic Abuse Helpline for Men and Women (originally named Battered Men's Helpline) was incorporated as a non-profit organization.

The newly acquired toll free helpline number was placed in a front-page article on male victims in the Bangor Daily News during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, October 2000, and on that first day the helpline received fourteen calls. The phone has not stopped ringing since then!
