Founded in 1948 as the St Catharines Civic Orchestra by Jan Wolanek, the NSA was initially a community orchestra; its governing body assumed the name St Catharines Symphony Association in 1963 and changed it in 1978 to Niagara Symphony Association to reflect increased regional responsibilities.
