- Instead of using the NHL points system, we use a variable merit/demerit points system that does more than just give a fixed amount to a winner, and nothing to a loser. The NHLDRS "learns" the league's teams at first as each team starts with an equal rating (and therefore predictions cannot be made right away). In time, after 10 games per team or more, the "rating" becomes more and more accurate as to where the team belongs in the whole league.
