Newswomens Club of New York
New York NY

Description

The club was founded in 1922 by women who covered the suffragist movement. As the movement snowballed, it became a story city editors couldn't ignore. Desperate, those who had a woman on staff -- generally, to write social notes or news of home and hearth -- turned to her. From then on, she covered breaking news and saw her byline on page one. The fight for equal pay for equal work came years later, but the suffragist movement set the women's press corps on its way.

The movement brought together New York's newspaperwomen. Day by day, as they filed stories, a camaraderie sprang up. When the 19th Amendment was adopted, they were soon too busy to see each other but the bond had been forged. Martha Coman, the only woman reporter on the New York Herald, proposed they form an organization for "professional improvement, to promote good fellowship, and to conduct charitable and educational activities within our profession."

The club was a hit. In 1923, the tradition of an annual social event was established. The event attracted byliners and headline-makers such as Mayor Jimmy Walker and film star Mary Pickford.
