Marion M Campbell attended the University of New South Wales and the University of Western Australia where she completed a BA with First Class Honours in French. With the help of a Hackett Scholarship, conferred by the University of Western Australia, she studied for a Maitrise en Lettres Modernes in Aix en Provence. her dissertation was on the poetry of Stephan Mallarme. She tutored in French at the University of Western Australia and in comparative literature at Murdoch University. She taught in a wide range of subjects on literary and cultural analysis. Marion subsequently coordinated creative writing courses at Murdoch University and has been coordinating Creative Writing at the University of Melbourne since January 1999.

Her writing has explored the dynamics of sexual, cultural, racial, and ideological identification as they translate from the realm of the imaginary in the muck and peril of real social relations.

her published work includes three novels - Lines of Flight (1985), Not being Miriam (1988) and Prowler (1999) - all published by the Fremantle Arts Centre Press. Not being Miriam was awarded the Western Australian Literary Week Award in 1988. She has had 2 works performed at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art. Marion Campbell has also published short fiction, poetry, essays and articles in the realm of feminist cultural and literary analysis, and has worked editorially on students' anthologies and an international journal (SPAN).
