Description
The New England Unit is the founding unit of The Herb Society of America. In 1933, seven women formed an educational society dedicated to the study and use of herbs. The Society has grown from one unit to 43, and from the initial seven members to over 3,000 members in the United States, Canada and other countries. The National Headquarters is now located in Kirtland, Ohio (near Cleveland). The New England Unit has approximately 100 members, living mostly in Massachusetts.
The Herb Society of America was founded for the purpose of furthering the knowledge and use of herbs, and for contributing the results of the experience and research of its members to the records of horticulture, science, literature, history, the arts and economics. The motto of The Society is taken from the herbalist, John Parkinson, Herbs"For Use and For Delight."
The Society is concerned with the cultivation of herbs and with the study of their history and their uses, both past and present.
