Description

The Western Clinical School is based in the Sydney West Area Health Service which serve a local population of about one and a half million. The population is younger than average and of diverse social and ethnic background, including many immigrant groups and the Daruk Aboriginal community.

Westmead, a large and long-established teaching hospital (750 beds), was planned and built as the major referral centre for Western Sydney. Opened in 1978, it provides a full range of general services together with highly specialised units delivering state-wide or national services. Nepean (450 beds) became a teaching hospital in the early 1990s. Nepean provides a full range of general and specialised services including most medical and surgical sub-specialities. Blacktown, Mt Druitt, Auburn, Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains and Lithgow are smaller district general hospitals which participate in clinical teaching.

Westmead Hospital is 26 km west of the Sydney central business district, situated on the edge of Parramatta Park. Nepean is 28 km further west in Penrith, at the foot of the beautiful Blue Mountains. Frequent commuter and suburban trains link the University (Redfern Station) with Westmead Hospital (Westmead Station - 30 minute journey) and with Nepean Hospital (Kingswood Station - 55 minutes from the centre of Sydney), while the M4 Motorway provides a motor link between the various teaching sites. Low cost live-in accommodation is available for students at both Westmead and Nepean.
