North Carolina Department of Insurance Home Page
The North Carolina Department of Insurance was created in 1899 by the State General Assembly when it was lobbied by a group of insurance agents seeking regulation of North Carolina’s insurance business. Prior to March 6, 1899, the licensing and supervision of insurance companies doing business in North Carolina was delegated to the Secretary of State. Throughout its more than 100 years, the Department of Insurance has provided a valuable service to the people of North Carolina.
Jim Long is currently serving his fifth term as Insurance Commissioner and also serves as the State Fire Marshal, having been first elected in 1985. He is the ninth Commissioner of Insurance in North Carolina.
The Commissioner and the Department of Insurance regulate the various kinds of insurance sold in North Carolina and the companies and agents that sell it. All authority to regulate the business of insurance is delegated to the Commissioner by the General Assembly.
