That's me at Alpine Ski Club in 1973 wearing a ski jacket that my mother sewed for me. I loved the red t-bar and the A-B-C was my favourite run…that was…until the North Chair opened up offering fresh challenges like the Parade and Long Johns. Steak on a Bun was always delectable and darting through the trees on the trails beside the Arrowhead was the cool thing to do (and wicked good times!). Not so "good times" was closing my eyes when I went over the jump on The Kent…not recommended by the way. But by far my scariest moment was licking the cold chairlift bar and having my tongue get stuck. Couldn't really have picked a worse time or place to try that!
The memories of my childhood spent at Alpine every weekend and now our house in Collingwood are my most treasured possessions. For years I lived in the city and remembered the simple joys that seemed to flourish in Southern Georgian Bay, and wondered if, like everything else, the area had succumbed to the modern world and no longer resembled the charming place of my childhood.
But I wonder no longer. Last August my husband and I decided to make Collingwood our permanent home and it has been without a doubt the best decision we have ever made. Sure things look a little different here and there, but the heart and soul of the Bay hasn't changed a bit. Now Sunday nights take on a whole new dimension as we relax and watch the weekenders hustle back to the City. We feel lucky and maybe a little bit smug.
