The mustard family is a big one, and its fold includes scores of common weeds and such vegetables as cabbage, broccoli, and turnip. Relatively few herbalists and gardeners grow mustard for seed; it is a different plant than that cultivated for greens. But gardeners are showing a renewed interest in growing seeds for homemade mustard. Nurseries and seed companies carry black mustard (Brassica nigra), white or yellow mustard (B. birta), and brown mustard (B. juncea), the common commercial variety. Why grow your own? Because you can have your mustard hot or mild, plain or spiced.
The mustards are equally at home in the kitchen and sickroom. They contain no poisonous parts, but the powdered seeds and the oil can be irritating if misused.
Medicinal: The mustard plaster is a time-honored cure for the congested chest. It causes the skin to feel warm and opens the lungs to make breathing easier. The same plaster, made from the powdered seeds of black mustard or the milder species, has also been used to relieve arthritis, rheumatism, toothache, and other causes of soreness or stiffness.
