"We probably should expand our mapmaking concept to other areas," states company spokesperson Bob Venezia. "But since Stanley Friedman, the owner, didn't start this business until he was 70, we didn't feel he had the strength to tackle another National Park. But who knows? The night is young!"
After retiring at age 55, Friedman took up hiking and eventually scrambling (non-technical climbing - class 3 and 4). Initially northern California and then Norway, France, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland; eventually moving to Washington state to bounce around the Cascade Mountains from the North Cascades down to Mt Rainier, 5 to 6 days a week, 2000 to 4000 feet of elevation gain per day. You might say he was slightly obsessed.
