Description
Although in the planning stage for over 20 years, Mountain Lily Gems officially opened for business in 1997. It’s founder, me, Robert Drummond, was trained as a biochemist and worked in biomedical research from 1970 to 1997. My second love, a long-term interest in gemology and gem cutting, began as a child when my family took summer vacations across the Western U.S. Those trips always included stops to collect rocks, minerals, and fossils. As an adult my travels expanded to include famous gemfields in Australia, Brazil, and Russia. In 1997, after 27 years in biomedical research, I decided to leave science and begin a second career selling gemstones.
The goal of Mountain Lily Gems is to provide collectors and jewelers with one-of-a-kind natural gemstones of certified origin. My belief is that part of the fascination of owning and enjoying a natural gemstone is the knowledge of exactly where that stone came from; who collected the rough gem, and when. Many people are unaware that exquisite amethyst has been found in Arizona, that fine sapphires are mined in Montana, or that naturally blue topaz comes from Texas. The gemstones I offer for sale are from such locations. Much of my material is from small U.S. gem mines, but I also carry material from mines in other parts of the world. I use this site to show you those mines, the people who mine the gems, the rough gem material, and the finished gemstones.
Some of my gemstones are suitable for incorporation into fine jewelry, other gems are for collector’s shelves only. I offer many internet links to help educate visitors and customers about the various properties of gemstones; what makes them suitable for jewelry, or not. I clarity grade my stones following strict GIA criteria and provide color images of each. Most of my stones have been precision cut, one at a time, by an expert faceter. I will occasionally offer a "native cut" or machine cut gem that I believe is still of good quality and beauty. I also provide multiple links to sites offering stones of all qualities.
