Description
After I began avidly mountain biking here in WNC during the summer of 1996, I began looking for local trail information on the internet to use to plan my rides. This is when I found out that it just didn't exist! I was forced to use many different and expensive resources (such as guidebooks) to know where to go to explore the mountains on my bike. So, once I had been riding for a while and knew the local trails, I decided I make the information available on the internet myself. MTB WNC was the result, going online in late '97, and it has grown quite a bit since then. I received a domain name for the site, mtbikewnc.com, on Friday, August 27, 1999, at 10:00 P.M. I left the old site up at the old address, just for laughs. The address there is http://members.aol.com/mtbikewnc/MTBWNC.html. On December 14, 2003, I launched WNCoutdoors.info, which at this time includes both mountain biking (this site) and hiking information (at http://www.hikewnc.info).
The purpose of this site is to provide detailed, useful information about trails and mountain biking in the WNC area. Hopefully, you will be able to use this information on your next ride. This site assumes that you are already familiar with mountain biking as a sport, and doesn't try to cover all the issues that go along with that.
My philosophy on mountain biking is that it's a fast, efficient, extremely fun way to get out, get some exercise...and explore the mountains. For this reason, I never neglect to stop and see a waterfall, gaze at the view, explore a cave, or wade in a stream (unless the downhill is just too good to stop)...this is reflected in my trail and ride descriptions. I try to include info about the mountains around the trails...perhaps a side hike to a waterfall, or a good swimming hole for after a long, hot ride.
