About Us
Mr. Ken's Furs is located in central Missouri in the heart of a Pennsylvania Dutch community. We are just south of a small town called California, which is approximately 130 miles east of Kansas City, 150 miles west of St. Louis, and just a 30 minute drive west from our state capital in Jefferson City. My name is Ken Cook, owner of Mr. Ken's Furs. My wife, Deanna, and I used to be dairy farmers. When dairy profits fell off in the late 1970s, we looked for another way to produce income and began raising Rex rabbits as part of a co-op. When the co-op failed to provide a market, we found ourselves elbow deep in rabbit pelts with no buyers.
Necessity is the mother of invention, however, and I set out to find a way that we could use those pelts ourselves. So, this country boy traveled to the big city of Chicago and took a course on pattern making. I began making rabbit fur coats, and in 1982 Mr. Ken's Furs was born!
