Description
"Every year families come apple picking. Apple picking is a tradition in Minnesota. It’s fun to wander out in the orchard, see the ripe apples hanging from the trees and feel the crisp fall air. You can hear families calling to each other as they hunt for the perfect tree to pick. The kids are excited and having a good time. Everyone enjoys himself. It doesn’t take long and your bag is full of sound, ripe apples. This is autumn in Minnesota.
In our region apples mature from mid August to late October. Our earliest variety is called “Early Blush” and the latest variety is “Praire Spy”. Some are enjoyed best eaten fresh while others are superior baking apples. Some can be used in almost any recipe whether raw, baked or cooked in some manner. Some varieties are especially good for making cider. Here we rely on the cidermaker’s art to choose varieties to blend for a well flavored apple cider. As yet we do not pasteurize in order to retain its original fresh pressed flavor.
Our orchard is in a continual changing upgraded modification. In other words, you’ll notice some small blocks of young trees that are only spaced 4 feet apart. Because of a new variety called “Honeycrisp” it has become necessary to have these trees held up in the poles and wires. Our demand for this apple always exceeds our supply. This apple matures about the second week in September. Another variety that is new to our orchard is called “Zesta”. This apple matures before August 15th and its taste is surpassed only by Honeycrisp.
