Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board

Description

Welcome to the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board website. In the late 1800s, the Minneapolis Board of Trade created the finest system of parks and parkways of any city in America. The natural beauty of the Chain of Lakes, and the later evolution of the Playground and Neighborhood Center Movement augmented this very special park system.

Over the years, our park system has grown from a few city parks to a large, nationally recognized park system of nearly 6,400 acres of land and water, including over 170 park properties throughout the city and 49 year round staffed recreation centers. Today, an important component of what makes Minneapolis a great place to live and work is these parks and lakes. In fact, we believe the Minneapolis Park system to be the best park system in the galaxy. It was described by the Trust for Public Land in 2000 as the "closest thing to park nirvana".

The MPRB primarily serves the nearly 400,000 Minneapolis residents, offering recreational, environmental and other park programs and services for all ages from pre-schoolers to seniors. Many people who don't live in Minneapolis also enjoy our parks. Every year 15.5 million people visit our regional parks, second only to the Mall of America as the most visited place in the Twin Cities area.
