Title
Israel's SABRAnet - Where Israel comes alive on the Internet
Description
SABRAnet®, is the first Israeli portal and a leading, award-winning site since 1995. The site offers up-to-the-minute news and information about and from Israel, virtual community features, a complete guide to Israel-related sites, and a one-stop shop for Israeli goods and services. SABRAnet®, formerly The SABRA Home Page of Israel, was developed by Eyal Dunkel on June 27, 1995 as a directory for Israel-related sites using his university Web account.
Why SABRAnet? A "SABRA" (Sabra, masculine; Sabarit, feminine) in Hebrew is a nickname given to native Israelis. Sabra is also a cactus fruit commonly found in the Middle East and South America called prickly pear. Just like the cactus fruit, Israelis are said to be rough on the outside, but soft and sweet on the inside.
On August 22, 1996, The SABRA Home Page of Israel was repositioned, moving from computers offered by the university to a new private domain, and gaining a new name SABRAnet®. From inception, SABRAnet® has positioned itself as a leading Israel-related portal.
