Birmingham, Alabama attorney Mike Burrell was born and raised in DeKalb County, Alabama. He graduated from Valley Head High School in 1963, and from Jacksonville State University in 1969. After serving in the United States Army, he began a career with the Alabama Department of Revenue, starting as a sales and use tax examiner, becoming an income tax examiner, and finally being promoted to supervisor of the income tax field audit section of first the Tuscaloosa district and later the Birmingham, Alabama district.
While employed by the Alabama Department of Revenue, Mr. Burrell attended night law classes at the Birmingham School of Law, graduating in 1993 and being admitted to the Alabama State Bar the same year. After retiring from the Alabama Department of Revenue, he worked as law clerk for Judge Mac Parsons of the 10th Judicial Circuit in Bessemer, Alabama, then opened a law office in Bessemer.
