Title

Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Singapore

Description

The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources (MEWR) started as the Ministry of the Environment in 1972 with the main mission of providing Singaporeans with a quality living environment, a high standard of public health and protection against the spread of communicable diseases. On 1 September 2004, the current name took effect to reflect the ministry's expanded role in managing water as a strategic national resource.

Having performed well and achieved a clean and green living environment, MEWR aims to move from maintaining good environmental performance in the short term to achieving environmental sustainability in the long term. Together with its two statutory boards, the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Public Utilities Board (PUB), this can be accomplished through continued innovation in managing Singapore's limited resources, and vibrant partnerships and co-operations across the 3P sectors - private, public and people - crucial in meeting Singapore's environmental sustainability challenges.
