- How does Steven Houts make paper? Paper pulp, paper vat, and screens are used to make the paper. Pulp is made of hemp, abaca, and cotton. Steven makes a sculptural grade of paper, with surface texture. Janet Houts designs quilts. Art quilts are created by commission or made as a one-of-kind wall hanging, lap throw, or bed quilt. A textile company will request a design for a new line of fabric.
