Figures released last week by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that 2003 saw a record number of Britons emigrating. Last year 190,900 UK citizens moved abroad (the highest official annual estimate since this measurement began, and over 5,000 up on 2002), out of a total of some 362,000 long-term residents who emigrated; that latter figure is set against a total of 513,000 who arrived in the UK to stay for more than a year.
British citizens were the only group in the ONS report to experience a net outflow – more people leaving than entering – while last year saw an increase in the British population of 14,200 citizens of European Union countries; 20,800 citizens of the Old Commonwealth; 86,500 citizens of the New Commonwealth; and 114,800 citizens of other foreign countries.
Now we are experiencing large numbers of English people moving around the world as more people move into England we are all moving out! If you have got this far then you must have the spark of interest that so many people now have. It seems to be a growing trend to own a second home abroad or to move there indefinitely.
