MEDICATION NONCOMPLIANCE…A DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH A 21ST CENTURY SOLUTION

July 21, 2008, Houston, TX - MedPrompt, a provider of wireless content to aid in medication compliance and disease management has released the following information regarding the problem of Americans not taking their prescription medications as intended.

MedPrompt is announcing that effective August 1, 2008 MedPrompt will be seeking strategic alliances with select wireless providers, independent pharmacies, and specialty cellular after market merchants to provide MedPrompt’s unique electronic text message compliance service to individuals wrestling with the forgetfulness issue when dealing with their multiple prescription medications.

Ron Moran, CEO of MedPrompt in Houston states, "Medication noncompliance is simply defined by us as not adhering to physician instructions concerning prescription medications". Some examples of noncompliance include:

• Not having a prescription filled or refilled • Taking too much or too little of the medication • Erratic dosing due to forgetfulness • Discontinuing the medication too soon

According to a Senate health care subcommittee study on medication noncompliance, not taking medications as directed results in over 300,000 deaths in the U.S. annually, 125,000 deaths in recovering cardiac patients alone! (American Heart Assn.).

Following are some useful facts for multiple medication users:

• 92% of multiple medication users are between the ages of 50 and 75 • 64% of multiple medication users rely on someone else for reminders • 88% of multiple medication users family members worry about compliance • Compliance problems occur with 86% of those taking three or more meds • Compliance improves by 30% or more when instructions are easily understood • 11.4 % of hospital admissions in those over 65 are due to noncompliance • Noncompliance increases by up to 75% when multiple physicians are involved

Moran further states, "The number one reason we have found for medication noncompliance is forgetfulness. People are leading active, busy lives, but the medication which allows them to control their medical condition many times takes a back seat to other activities, and it just slips their mind".

“Having a system of timely, accurate, easy to use reminders provided by forward thinking and caring wireless providers via text messages to their client cell phone base can virtually eliminate the forgetfulness factor in most patients”, Moran concludes.
