Since 1885 City Savings Bank has been serving its' community by making home mortgage, construction loans, home improvement loans, auto, boat and personal loans, as well as small business loans. In addition, by paying some of the highest rates on savings and certificates of deposits, City Savings provides a convenient and safe way for local residents to invest their funds. Depositors can rest assured that their funds are safely and productively reinvested in the community, benefiting everyone.
City Savings Bank started out as a small storefront building and loan association in the 300 block of Franklin Street in Michigan City, helping "members" or depositors obtain loans to build or buy their homes. Pictures of the inside of the office from that early era show a small but ornate office with the old fashion "teller cages", much like you see in the movie "It's A Wonderful Life". The office and the "style" of doing business (i.e. making loans to depositors for their homes) changed very little even through the 1960's, but the Savings and Loan soon began to grow and to outgrow its small old-fashion office. Iin 1969, the bank bought property on the corner of Franklin and Fulton Streets, renovated it, and moved its operations south. This began a period of progress and growth that continues today. Since the move, the assets of City Savings Bank have increased twenty fold and the building has been remodeled three times.
Through all the growth and changes, the bank has remained a strong "well-capitalized" institution as defined by the federal banking agency, and has for many years continued to receive the "5-star" rating from Bauer's Financial Rating Service. In November 2000, the bank converted its entire operations to the next generation of Windows-based computer operating system, which will allow us to better meet our customers' needs with faster service and new products.
