Title

Mill Creek Vineyards - A small family winery in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County.

Description

Mill Creek has been producing quality wines for almost 30 years, and thus has quite a rich history. Throughout this site you will find stories and pictures that describe what our lives are like today and what it was like to start a winery 30 years ago. The following sections provide more information about the personalities behind the wine and the history of Mill Creek Vineyards.

Summer in Sonoma County is usually very dry. Some say the Golden State received its name not from the gold found in the hills during 1849 but from the golden grasses growing on them. Typically, the last rain of the year comes in April and, save for a few showers, we remain dry until October or November. This lack of rain is one of the unique conditions that make this region so ideal for growing wine grapes. If we did receive a good deal of rain, the vines would pump that water directly into the berries, leaving them bland and uninteresting. By using drip irrigation, we can precisely control exactly how much water each vine receives.

During the summer, we prepare for the busiest time at a winery… harvest. We need to be prepared to take in the grapes quickly and get them out of the heat and sun and into the cool winery. Due to the long hours and hectic schedules of the entire county, we need to make sure all the equipment is ready and enough help has been scheduled.
