Description
The story of Mathis Music begins on the campus of Indiana University where I was a piano major in the late '60's. One day I bumped into a lovely voice major named Renee, and that was the beginning of our partnership in music and in life. I often tease my wife that she was a cute singer looking for an accompanist. Well, she got one.
Renee's grandparents lived in Sarasota, and when we came to visit I met the owner of a west coast music company. He subsequently offered me an opportunity to relocate to Florida. We did, and I became a Baldwin dealer. From that initial position, I established Mathis Music in June of 1979 in a busy shopping plaza on Tuttle Avenue in a building with 900 square feet.
Our business prospered and we kept adding on. In 1995 it became obvious we needed a new home. One reason is that we became representatives for Allen Organs. We now sell to and service churches in 15 counties in Florida. Once we took on Allen Organs, I knew we would have to expand because Allen Organs are the best and most sought after in the field. Ted Hayes is the Manager of the Church Organ Division at Matins Music.
