During the summer of 1996, selected items from my surfing memorabilia collection formed a small part of a temporary Surfing exhibition at The Museum of North Devon in Barnstaple, England. An unknown creative genius there chopped the two ends off an old VW Combi, had them skilfully hippified at the local art college, then used them as display cabinets for some of the surf stuff - what a brilliant idea!
Having tried various water-based activities throughout my life, I'd discovered surfing a few years earlier and had become hooked. The UK has never had a permanent Museum of Surfing and Surf Culture, and I would willingly have given up the day job and thrown myself at resolving this but for one small problem: I am locationally challenged. You see, most (but by no means all) surfing in the UK happens in the South West, where Atlantic swells aren't blocked by Ireland. I live in the North West and am happily settled there.
