Title

Alliance for Lupus Research: Prevent, treat and cure lupus through medical research

Description

The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR) is a national voluntary health organization based in New York City that was founded in 1999 and is chaired by Robert Wood Johnson IV, a member of the founding family of Johnson & Johnson. The mission of the ALR is to support research into the cause, cure, treatment and prevention of systemic lupus erythematosus and its complications. Commonly known as lupus, this disease afflicts as many as one million Americans, ninety percent of whom are women. Extremely difficult to diagnose, lupus is the leading cause of death among women with autoimmune diseases who are in their childbearing years.

Since 2000, ALR has given more money to lupus research than any non-governmental agency in the world; to date $32 million has been committed. Areas of research emphasis include: susceptibility, pathogenesis, inflammation and tissue damage, clinical assessment and therapy. The hallmarks of ALR’s program are an emphasis on multidisciplinary science and a keen focus on research that can be moved quickly from the laboratory to the patient’s bedside. One hundred percent of all donations from the public go directly to research due to the support of the Board of Directors, who underwrite all of ALR’s operating costs.

ALR uses a peer review system to make all funding decisions. To date, ALR has contracted with the Arthritis Foundation to provide peer review for all grant proposals submitted to the ALR. Under its signature program, Target Identification in Lupus , ALR has awarded two-year grants of $500,000 to over 38 research projects at some of the finest laboratories and medical schools throughout the world. Eighteen months after awarding grants, ALR reviews each project, and those showing the most promise receive additional funding of up to $1 million.
