Description
Lisa began performing in her grandmother's kitchen archway as a toddler and started playing the piano a few years later. While studying drama at NYC's High School of Performing Arts, Lisa's flair for songwriting and performance began to flourish and these talents were added to her repertoire of commercials, plays and television credits including, of course, Star Search. She then went on to pursue her talents in music at Bard College where she graduated with honors in Arranging and Composition and received the Larry McLeod Award in Jazz. There, Lisa formed a band with good friend Rory Makem of the Makem Brothers called Lisa Lisa and the Country Jam and her love for country music was spawned. Lisa returned to NYC, and dove into the music scene. Since, she has and attracted a loyal, and ever-growing following, has been lucky enough to work with some of the most brilliant musicians and producers around and released 2 cd's Becoming and Three. She plays paino and guitar and has created a style all her own by combining classic country with her childhood pop and soul inspirations. Lisa's building a name for herself as a fresh, original recording artist, writer and performer. Some say she makes you want to dive into the world and find your destiny. Who are your musical influences? Oh, my music collection is all over the place. I guess you could say I was born a Motown baby. I heard a lot of aoul music as a child since my father was an arranger and producer there for so many years. I also grew up on ALOT of Saturday Night Fever. But my biggest lyrical influences come from the classic songwriter era . I love Jackson Browne, Carley Simon, Fleetwood Mac, Robbie Robertson, James Taylor and my more modern indulgences include Ryan Adams, John Mayer, Dave Matthews, David Grey, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, Shelby Lynn, Alanis Morristte, Michael Tolcher, Steve Delopoulos and Nicole Nordeman. I also adore blue grass, country music as well as classical. I studied orchestration at Bard College and orchestrated all my pop songs for a sympony- modeling after another huge inspiation of mine- Elton John.
