Free public domain audio books

LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain and release the audio files back onto the net. Our goal is to make all public domain books available as free audio books. We are a totally volunteer, open source, free content, public domain project.

Public Domain & LibriVox

Copyright gives an individual or corporation exclusive rights on a text, for a limited period of time. This means no one else can reproduce the text, or make derivative works (such as audio recordings) while the copyright is in force. Eventually, though, copyright expires, and the text becomes free, libre, and enters the “public domain.” Meaning anyone can use that text however they wish.

LibriVox takes texts already in the public domain, asks volunteers to make audio recordings of that text, and then releases the resulting audio back into the public domain. If you volunteer to record for LibriVox, you must agree to release the audio files you make into the public domain. Meaning anyone can use those audio files however they wish.
