Description

The Constituency is large, comprising approximately 29,000 hectares and extending roughly twelve by thirteen miles. It stretches in the west from close to the suburbs of Brighton to the further outskirts of Eastbourne in the east. Bounded by the Channel coast in the south, it abuts the Weald at its northern boundary.

For 130 years until 1997, when we narrowly lost the seat to the Liberal Democrats, Lewes had consistently returned Conservative MPs with substantial majorities – most recently Sir Tufton Beamish 1944 and Tim Rathbone, 1974 – 1997.

There are four principal towns: Lewes, Seaford, Newhaven and Polegate which together account for fifty four per cent of the electorate of the constituency. Rural villages include Alciston,Alfriston, Arlington, Barcombe, Beddingham,Berwick,Chailey, Cooksbridge,Firle, Glynde, Hamsey, Kingston, Laughton, Newick, Plumpton, Ringmer, Ripe, Selmeston, Wivelsfield.
