Title
Lehigh Valley, Pa. - Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton
Description
Any history of Allentown has to begin with the man for whom it was named. The Chief Justice of colonial Pennsylvania's Supreme Court, William Allen was an 18th century American aristocrat.
Bethlehem is a unique combination of old and new. Almost every corner of the city exudes its own sense of history. Tall, straight buildings of factory-made steel, glass, and brick mingle with structures that illustrate the exacting patience necessary to connect hand-hewn logs and limestone block.
In 1736, Thomas Penn, son of William Penn, and Benjamin Eastburn, surveyor general, selected and surveyed the "thousand acre tract" of land at the confluence of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers.
