League Against Cruel Sports Ltd

Description

Founded in 1924, the League Against Cruel Sports is the UK's leading animal welfare group campaigning to end cruelty to animals in the name of "sport." Over many years, we were always at the forefront of the campaign to make fox hunting, the hunting of other mammals and hare coursing illegal. We achieved a great victory with the passing of the Protection of Wild Mammals (Scotland) Act and the Hunting Act.

We achieved the ban through a combination of grass roots campaigning, press exposure of video evidence of the cruel reality and hypocrisy of what really goes on behind the respectable façade of hunting, and cross-party political lobbying.

The League backs up its campaigning work with a conservation programme providing practical help to wildlife through its network of wildlife sanctuaries in the West Country. Since 1959, the League has purchased land of special benefit to wildlife, and the animals that live on this land are free from persecution and disturbance. Sound conservation practices are employed to provide a safe haven for hunted animals, and many sanctuaries are now listed as Sites of Special Scientific Interest .
