About the Leach Botanical Garden

Leach Botanical Garden is located in a woodland hollow carved by Johnson Creek in southeast Portland. This botanical garden specializes in preserving the original Leach collection as well as introducing Northwest native plants through educational programs, conservation, and community involvement.

The collection features more than 2,000 special hybrids and cultivars and can be enjoyed on a self-guided tour.

History of the Leach Botanical Garden

The Leach Botanical Garden property was originally part of a 320-acre land claim belonging to Jacob Johnson, one of the sawmill operators who furnished lumber for Portland's earliest homes. Johnson's property extended from Mt. Scott outward, including the creek that was later named for him. In 1931, John and Lilla Leach purchased part of what had been Johnson's property and named it Sleepy Hollow. John, a pharmacist, and Lilla, an accomplished botanist, devoted their land to their fascination with plants.
