Description

In 1983, a small group of Lansdowne residents banded together to form the Greater Lansdowne Civic Association (GLCA). They shared a vision of preserving the special qualities that led them to make their home in Lansdowne in the first place: beautiful old houses, shady trees, sidewalks, a village center, and a strong sense of history and community. Additionally, they shared a passion for historic preservation, for upholding aesthetic standards in the Borough, and for environmental responsibility. The organization’s first priority was lobbying Lansdowne’s Borough Council to update its 20-year old zoning code. The code allowed for the replacement of large historic homes with dense housing structures. It was feared that the proliferation of these buildings and their rental units would destroy the small town atmosphere of the borough. Although the organization was formed to address this specific concern, the GLCA has grown to tackle many quality of life issues affecting the entire Borough of Lansdowne. The GLCA, designated under the Internal Revenue Service code as a 501 c-3 non-profit organization, is led by a highly committed, all-volunteer board of directors . Currently, 600 households are members.
