Description
Gary Starkweather is the inventor of the laser printer. He was part of those legendary early days at Xerox PARC, went on to work at Apple Computer and now he's got his hardware lab here, at Microsoft Research. On November 18, 2002, he was inducted into CRN's Hall of Fame.
Gary Starkweather's not at all the way you might expect a legend of computer science to be - he's not vain or distant, he doesn't walk into walls or need to be reminded to eat lunch. He's a regular guy - open, friendly, straightforward. He tells a good story and likes a good laugh. He's an inventor: and he's not interested in money or power, he wants to use his intellect to make his dreams a reality.
He likes it here at Microsoft Research, likes how Microsoft encourages creative thinking, how it's ready to seize on good ideas that might make it money. He's worked for companies that weren't this way - he had to fight tooth and nail to get Xerox management to even let him try his idea with the laser.
