Reauthorization of the PATRIOT Act
Congress wants to finish its work of reauthorizing the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Requires to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act (USA PATRIOT Act) before it recesses for Thanksgiving.
Despite the fact that recent news stories have shown lack of oversight for FISA warrants, and an overuse of National Security Letters, Congress seems intent on not allowing the 16 sunset provisions to automatically disappear on December 31, 2005.
According to this amazing report in the Washington Post, the government has been issuing 30,000 National Security Letters a year. Information from each of those letters could affect records of hundreds or thousands of individuals. This information will be kept on file forever, and it can be given to any local, state, or tribal government -- or to any private entity. How's that for the government going overboard in surveillance? And Gonzales swore there were no abuses of the Patriot Act. Hah! We still haven't seen the Inspector General's report on the abuses in the Brandon Mayfield case. Of course, the IG can't release those abuses until after the Patriot Act has been safely reauthorized.
