Land O'Lakes

LandoLakesLogo.jpg

Land O’Lakes is an enduring symbol of the American dairy industry, with a long history and high brand recognition. Land O’Lakes is a cooperative owned by farmers, offering agricultural supplies and business services to farmers and other cooperatives. The company is an enduring symbol of American business, but also does business in over 50 countries. Land O’Lakes is one of many large U.S. cooperatives owned by farmers and producers. The company serves as both a producer co-op and as to its producers as a consumer co-op. It sells agricultural products such as livestock feed to its network of ranchers, farmers and producers through its local cooperative network.

History

Land O’Lakes began in 1921 as a cooperative focused on butter production. Instead of the sour cream butter that was the market standard, Land O’Lakes sought to create a market for sweet cream butter that could be sold in sticks instead of tubs. This shortly became the market’s butter standard, launching Land O’Lakes as a leader in the industry. The company began to expand in 1924, and in 1928 it unveiled its iconic Native American maiden symbol. This symbol has changes slightly over the decades, but remains essentially the same symbol after 80 years. The company soon began to focus on its agribusinesses, including assisting co-op members with their egg, milk, meat and crop productions. Land O’Lakes now sells products to enhance crop yields, animal milk substitutes and feed. It is now North America’s largest feed supplier and agronomy product distributor.

The Land O’Lakes Foundation

The Foundation is the charitable company set up by the Land O’Lakes cooperative, catering to several charitable works. The main focus is on assisting the communities that are affected by the company, including the plant and facility locations. The Foundation also awards scholarships annually. Scholarships are awarded to dairy science students studying at the graduate level. The Land O’Lakes Foundation has given away close to a million dollars in scholarships to about 70 students since the program started in 1996. The Foundation also focuses on human services in the communities it does business in, and contributes to the arts as well.

The Website

The Land O’Lakes website provides a place for cooperative members to get information about the issues that affect them. The site is also a portal for companion websites, such as the Prosperity Worldwide Web Site and the International Development Web Site that detail some of the company’s international initiatives. Co-op member information and meetings are posted on the site, as well as entry to a special site for milk producers.

International Efforts

Land O’Lakes has had a slow expansion into overseas markets over the decades, and has extended some of its agricultural development initiatives into those markets. Land O’Lakes international development provides agricultural education in developing countries. It also has a program to barter directly with locals to provide them with much-needed food supplies. Land O’Lakes has food aid donation programs internationally, donating both food and agricultural products. Prosperity Worldwide is a nonprofit branch that collects donations to support international initiatives.
