It was the turn of the century when my great-grandfather William Ewers emigrated to Iowa from Germany and opened his meat market in a small town nestled in the crook of the Des Moines and mighty Mississippi rivers. Strategically located, he knew the endless cornfields of Iowa would help to produce hogs with the tender prime cuts he required for his old-fashioned hickory smoked meats.
My great-grandfather supplied the people of this region with these excellent smoked meats for years. But, time passed, the growing meat packers hired my family members still involved in the meat business, including my Father, and the grocery stores replaced many specialty stores including my great-grandfather's.
For years-since I was small and used to play "store" for countless hours with some of my great-grandfather's old equipment and memorabilia-I knew I wanted to open my own store and make the same special smoked meats. A company that only cared about quality and not quantity, where I could get to know my customers personally and experience the satisfaction that comes from knowing how much they would enjoy our products. So after graduating from college and working in the meat industry for a few unfulfilling years, I decided to give substance to my childhood dream.
