It wasn’t so long ago I was doing a bit of keyword research for my new link building campaign for a site of mine. My first stop was to hit up the overture suggestion tool. I found my perfect keyword…. tons of traffic and relatively easy competition.

OK, so I spent the next few months building links based on this keyword and I give it a bit of time to age. I soon saw myself in the top5 on both google and yahoo. But hold on a minute - where the hell was the traffic? I was receiving next to no visitors, for a keyword that showed thousands of searches per day using the Overture Suggestion Tool. Insane, I thought, something must be wrong - maybe it’s because my rankings hadn’t spread to all the datacentres yet. I gave it another week or so, still nothing. I went digging… and to my suprise I found that on yahoo when you typed in the first part of this word (huge money word) it would ’suggest’ for you to also search the keyword I was targeting. So that meant that the term itself wasn’t anything special, but the fact yahoo suggested it may have given it traffic.

I basically wasted my time optimising for Google and waiting all that time, when I already got up to #8 on yahoo with just a little bit of onpage optimisation.
