- Growing up in Southern California, one of 5 diverse girls, gave me a unique view of female roles in our not-so-modern world. Our mother was a Wonder Woman and we all struggled to measure up to her. As was the 'norm' our mother raised us without much help from our father. She also worked as a switchboard operator to help feed our hungry clan. This led to too little time for 'feminine' pursuits, such as baking, knitting and sewing. Although my mother performed these functions, they were always done at break-neck speed and no time for teaching. I knew these creative pursuits made my mother happy. I wanted that same feeling but no idea how to bake, knit or sew. I repeated that hectic approach to motherhood until, one day, they were grown and had families of their own. That is when my extended family came into my life, Quilt Sisters, Quilt Mothers and Quilt Teachers. It was love and satisfaction from the first moment I touched the fabric and heard the roar of a sewing machine. I have pieced quilt tops for many years now and quilted for 5 years on my long arm. My husband is supportive and, fortunately, not fully informed of my quilting obsession. Our 3 children and the 8 grandchildren have all benefitted and suffered from my early attempts at complex quilt piecing. As long as my fingers and eyes hold out, I will be quilting.
