Known as the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’, Phuket, at 550 square kilometres in size, is not only Thailand’s largest island but also one of its wealthiest provinces. Undoubtedly the island’s largest source of income comes from the tourist market, but there are also thriving rubber and cashew nut industries.
Situated in the Andaman Sea off Thailand’s south west coast, Phuket’s terrain is incredibly varied and features a coastline boasting both rocky beaches and, most famously, long beaches with pristine white sand. Inland, the visitor will find hills covered in lush tropical vegetation, paddies and plantations. The beauty of the island is matched by its consistently tropical climate, with temperatures throughout the year averaging 27 degrees centigrade. And although there is a short rainy season, residents and visitors alike can expect to maintain healthy sun tans at any time of the year.
Phuket is linked to nearby Phang-Nga province on the mainland by bridge, but most of its visitors now choose to arrive by air. Phuket International Airport enjoys direct air services to major Asian cities like Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei, and now an increasing number outside of Asia, including London, Frankfurt and Perth.
