In the 50's and early 60's, the beginning of Florida's Space Coast, the population was divided into two categories - those who were employed by the aerospace industry with good salaries and benefits that included health insurance, and those who worked in the hospitality business without any benefits.
If a bartender, server or musician was unable to work because of illness or accident, he or she was unable to eat, pay rent or utility bills. This was the background and beginning of the Joe Realino Memorial Fund, which is one of a kind in the entire United States. The fund is named after a bartender - Joe Realino, who during the 50's and 60's helped organize benefits for people in the hospitality business.
Joe succumbed to cancer and never saw his dream to organize an annual benefit become reality. The fund was named in his honor and the first annual Joe Realino Memorial Fund Party, Show and Auction took place in March 1969. For 35 years local club owners and employees have kept it going, raising over 1 Million dollars to help many hospitality industry workers in need.
