On leaving the Army in 1976, where Jim had trained at the Army School Of Transport to become one of their foremost and successful Heavy Goods Vehicle Driving Instructors', he decided to set up his own HGV driver training school in Galashiels, Scotland. This initiative, combined with his unique 'one-to-one' personal training method, was to be the first of its kind in the Scottish Borders area and was immediately successful. Jim has also owned and ran his own successful Bus Company (Border Travel) and is therefore well experienced in the commercial road transport business. In particular, the significant difference good drivers can make to a company's ongoing vehicle maintenance and running costs. He considers this as one of the foundation blocks of his success, combined with his determination to provide a quality assured service and value for money.
Jim not only trains the candidates to pass the test, he trains them to be confident, competent and completely professional HGV drivers with the inherent knowledge that good drivers take good care of their vehicles. He also provides accommodation at very competitive prices for those that wish to stay during the course. Another unique advantage he has maintained over his competitors is that the training for both Rigid and Artic is conducted in Scania 92Ms, which are identical vehicles with splitter gear boxes, making the upgrade to Artic more economical.
Jim employs Steven Shanks, his nephew, as his Senior Instructor. Steven is also fully qualified, not only in training, but also the road haulage and public transport industries.
