Not one to allow her dreams of college to remain in the background, she struggled to raise a family and put herself through school while moving to each new duty station with her supportive husband. Finally, at the age of 30, she graduated with her B.S. in sociology from Florida Southern College.
A former stutterer, teenage mother, and young teenage bride, Martha J. Ross- Rodgers is now the owner of Jireh Publishers and internationally acclaimed author of two books, Awakenings and Woman to Woman . Her books are distributed not only in the United States, but in Africa, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines. Her book Awakenings and accompanying workbooks meet the Standards of Learning (SOL) in Reading/Literature and are being used in schools and other youth organizations.
She is also a newspaper columnist and a motivational speaker that has spoken to many diverse organizations, from middle schools to universities. Just a few of her many speaking accomplishments, include Norfolk State University, Hampton University, and the Office of Human Affairs. She has been honored by Girls, Inc. Center for Youth as one of its “Strong, Smart, and Bold Women” for her commitment to the community and positive image. In addition, she is the founder of “Toss Away the Could Haves and Should Haves” Day, a day celebrated on the third Saturday in July. It is a day dedicated to letting go of your past and celebrating your present.
