Description

Jewels, only 19 years old at the time and just starting out on her own, had left a little later than usual from one of her two jobs in Jacksonville. She was excited about having her plane ticket to go to California to spend Christmas with her family. On her drive home, instead of turning right to go home as usual, she went straight - straight into a nightmare!

Dec. 8, 1998 Jewels was going 18 mph through a green light when she was hit in her little pick-up truck by a 26 year old male, who was fleeing from the police, driving over 100 mph through a red light on a suspended license, with stolen license plates and drunk. The incredible crash made headlines throughout Jacksonville. She was then flown by helicopter to University Medical Center where she remained in a "critical" and "unstable" condition for many weeks. She was treated for a severe brain injury, 2 broken legs (upper and lower parts), two broken arms, a broken wrist, a broken ankle and neck fractures. She had a "halo" screwed into her head for 3 months until the 3 neck fractures healed. Her other internal and external injuries were also so numerous that it was truly a miracle that Jewels survived the crash at all.

April 15, 1999 Jewels spoke her first words, after being in a coma for 4 1/2 months! She remained at Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in what was classified as a "vegetative" or "minimally responsive" state - unable to move any part of her body, but appearing to hear and understand everything that went on around her.
