Artificial insemination and reproductive technologies are used as techniques in fertility clinics around the country. Human cloning techniques are not dealt with here. The pregnancy rates have improved over the years. In planning pregnancy the couple has to be patient and work with a specialist at least over a period of 3 years to overcome the infertility problem. The traditional method of artificial insemination is intrauterine insemination, also called IUI, where the sperm of the husband or from a sperm donor is inserted into the womb. This involves a gynecological exam and the washed sperm is inserted with a catheter into the uterine cavity. The pregnancy success rate is higher when the fertilized egg is inserted into the fallopian tube, in the early stages of cell division. This can be done from below with a hysteroscopy guided by ultrasonography or it can be done from above by laparoscopy, also called zift.
